Robert Coleman

Robert Coleman is a Dublin based composer whose works includes acoustic, electro-acoustic, video and spatial performances. Recently his output has focused on a number of multi-disciplinary collaborations with various artists such as Mihai Cucu(visual artist), Laura Sarah Dowdall(dancer/choreographer) and Slipdraft(Lighting Design) amongst others. He is a co-director of Kirkos, currently secretary of the Irish Composers Collective and has recently been accepted as a CMC represented composer. He graduated in 2015 with a BA in Composition (1st class honours) at the Royal Irish Academy of Music where he studied under Dr. Kevin O’Connell and Jonathan Nangle.

He is a two time winner of the West Cork Chamber Music Festival Composition Competition in 2016 and 2015 with his first two string quartets being premiered there at the celebrated West Cork Chamber Music Festival. He was also the winner of the Esker Festival Orchestra Call for Scores 2015 whereby his first orchestral piece ‘the Space Inside’ was premiered in Galway and subsequently toured around Ireland to venues in Limerick, Cork and Dublin by the orchestra.

He has participated in masterclasses with acclaimed international artists such as Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Jorg Widmann, Jonathan Dove, Lisa Limb, Houston Dunleavy, Sebastian Fagerlund, Deirdre Gribbin and others. Throughout the years he has been active as a composer in Dublin, he has amassed a considerable number of performances by many of Ireland’s leading musicians and international artists including Kate Ellis, Paul Roe, Sarah Watts, the Dublin Laptop Orchestra, Alluna Ensemble, the Fidelio Trio, Rhombus Quintet, John Feeley, Izumi Kimura, Nick Roth, Alexander Bernstein, Kirkos Ensemble, the Arioso Quartet and the Irish National Youth Ballet.

He is a two time recipient of the Arts Council Music Bursary Award in 2017 and 2016 which will support him in a number of projects including further collaboration with dancer Laura Sarah Dowdall, a collaboration with artist Renata Pekowska and in writing a new work for Kirkos. He is also a recipient of the South Dublin County Council Artist Bursary Award 2016.

Robert also previously received a B.Sc in Architecture from UCD and has a growing urge to explore the visual and physical associations in music.  Also supported by his bursaries is the creation of a graphic score work for violist Sebastian Adams.

Upcoming performances of his work include his piano trio ‘In Fervorous Frenzy’ with Crash Ensemble as part of Free State 10, a performance as part of Dublin One City One Book Musical Tales concert and a new work performed by pianist Billy O’Brien.
